Trakai

Why Visit?

Perfect day trip from Vilnius- history meets lakeside relaxation.

About Trakai:

Trakai is the kind of place that seems like it came straight out of a fairy tale.

It's an island castle rising from a blue lake, surrounded by forests, wooden houses, and the peaceful quiet of the Lithuanian countryside.

It's one of the most famous and beautiful places in the country, and it's only a short drive from Vilnius.

The Trakai Island Castle, a red-brick mediaeval fortress connected to the shore by wooden bridges, is the main attraction. Photographers (and anyone with a phone) love the views of the towers and walls reflected in Lake Galvė as you get closer. The castle museum has artefacts, weapons, and history that make Lithuania's Grand Duchy come alive.

But Trakai is more than just its famous castle. The town has a unique cultural flavour because of its historic Karaim community, whose wooden houses line the main street. You can't leave without trying kibinai, which are warm, flaky pastries filled with meat, vegetables, or cheese. The best place to eat them is by the water.

Trakai is a great place to relax and enjoy nature, history, and charm. You can paddle a kayak, take a peaceful boat tour, walk along the lakeshore, or explore the ruins of the peninsula castle.

Things to Do:

Visit Historic and Cultural Sites:

• Trakai Island Castle: The famous red-brick castle on an island in Lake Galvė. You can walk through medieval halls and towers and visit exhibitions on Lithuanian history.

• Trakai Peninsula Castle: The ruins of an older castle complex on land. It's quieter and great for a short walk and photos.

• Karaim Street (Karaimų gatvė) is a historic street with traditional wooden houses from the Karaim community. You can easily tell them apart by their three front-facing windows.

Fun and Relaxing:

• Lake Galvė is one of Trakai's many lakes: it's known for its views of castles, swimming spots, and peaceful scenery.

• Kayaking or Paddle Boating: Rent a kayak or pedal boat to get a view of Trakai Island Castle from the water.

• Walking Trails by the Lake: Flat, beautiful paths around the lakes that are perfect for leisurely walks and nature breaks.

Karaim Specialities (Trakai's Signature Food) and Snacks:

• Kibinai: Baked Karaim pastries with a flaky crust. They used to be filled with lamb, but can now be filled with beef, chicken, cheese, or vegetables. Trakai is the best place to try them.

• Karaim Broth and Simple Sides: Light meat broths and simple sides that are typical of Karaim cuisine.

• Lake Fish Fried Pike or Perch: Freshwater fish from nearby lakes that have been lightly breaded or pan-fried.
