About the Forests and Lakes
The forests and lakes in Lithuania make you want to take a deep breath, slow down, and enjoy nature's beauty.
Forests cover about a third of the country, and these forests are home to thousands of calm lakes, often surrounded by whispering pines and winding trails. Lithuanians often prefer to escape the city for the countryside.
It's one of the most famous and beautiful places in the country, and it's only a short drive from Vilnius.
One of the most popular places is Aukštaitija National Park. There are hills, old-growth forests, and more than 100 lakes in it.
You can see Lake Tauragnas here. It is the deepest lake in Lithuania and looks like a fjord.
People know Lake Baluošas for its central island. There are also beautiful villages, such as Palūšė, which has wooden churches and small piers that are ideal for canoe trips in the morning.
It appears the Labanoras Forest, the largest in Lithuania, extends south. There are many mushrooms, wildlife, and quiet paths that seem to draw you deeper into peace with each step. In the autumn, it shines gold.
Lake Plateliai is one of Lithuania's clearest and most popular lakes for swimming, kayaking, and relaxing summer picnics. It is in Žemaitija National Park on the western side of the country. Families and people who love nature both like it because it is surrounded by rolling hills and thick forest.
The biggest lake in Lithuania, Lake Drūkšiai, is calm and wide to the north. There are quiet beaches and calm places to fish.
There are also smaller gems all over the country, like Asveja, which is one of the longest lakes; Galvė, which has a view of a castle in Trakai; and many hidden forest ponds that you find by chance. You will remember the peaceful and beautiful forests and lakes in Lithuania long after you leave.
